Adventurer Andy Pag brings Geography to life

Published 4/11/2026

Students at Beacon Academy recently enjoyed an inspiring visit from adventurer and sustainability advocate Andy Pag, who delivered a fascinating talk to Key Stage 3 students about geography, exploration, responsible travel and environmental innovation.

Andy shared the remarkable story of his journey from London to Timbuktu in a vehicle powered by biofuel made from recycled chocolate waste, demonstrating how creative thinking and innovation can help reduce our environmental impact. Students also enjoyed hearing Andy's account of converting a campervan to run on used cooking oil collected from fast-food restaurants before embarking on an extraordinary journey around the world.

Through his experiences, the students learned about the challenges of long-distance expeditions, different cultures and environments, and the importance of sustainable thinking in tackling global issues.

His engaging presentation encouraged curiosity, resilience and a deeper appreciation of how geography helps us understand and connect with the wider world.

A key message from Andy's talk was the importance of sustainable development, reflected in the United Nations' definition of sustainability:

"Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
United Nations, 1987

The session was both educational and inspiring, giving students a deeper appreciation of how geography helps us understand the world around us and the challenges and opportunities that shape its future.

Mr Arthur, Head of Geography at Beacon Academy, said:

"Andy's visit provided an excellent opportunity for students to see geography in action beyond the classroom. His experiences demonstrated how geographical knowledge can be applied to real-world challenges and inspired students to think about sustainability from a global perspective. The students were thoroughly engaged throughout and gained valuable insights into the importance of responsible decision-making for the future of our planet."
