This week, Beacon Academy was honoured to welcome Martin Cosser, founder of the anti‑knife crime organisation, Charlie’s Promise, who delivered powerful and thought‑provoking talks to students in Years 9 and 12. This marked the second time we have welcomed Martin to Beacon Academy, and we were grateful for the opportunity to hear his important message once again.

The sessions form part of our school’s ongoing commitment to supporting students’ wellbeing and educating young people about personal safety, social responsibility and the real‑world consequences of knife crime.

During his visit, Martin shared the deeply moving story of his son, Charlie Cosser, who tragically lost his life to knife crime in 2023. His presentation explored the real‑life consequences of knife crime for individuals, families and communities, encouraging students to think carefully about choices, responsibility and speaking up if they are concerned about others.

Martin encouraged students to speak up if they are worried about someone carrying a knife or blade. He highlighted the importance of acting early and explained how concerns can be reported anonymously through Crimestoppers or Fearless on 0800 555 111 or via: https://crimestoppers-uk.org/fearless/give-information-anonymously

While the content was emotional and hard‑hitting, the sessions were delivered with sensitivity and were carefully tailored to be age‑appropriate, ensuring students felt supported throughout. The talks prompted thoughtful reflection and meaningful discussion among those who attended.

To support the assemblies, drop‑in sessions have been made available for students who wish to talk further, ask questions or share their thoughts in a safe and supportive environment. Any student who feels affected by the issues discussed is encouraged to speak to a member of the Student Support team.

PE and Food Technology Teacher, Miss Hilder, who organised the visit, said:

“Martin’s visit was a powerful reminder of the impact education can have. Hearing Charlie’s story first‑hand encouraged our students to reflect on choices and consequences. We are incredibly grateful to Martin for his ongoing work to educate and protect young people, and for returning to Beacon Academy and sharing his message once again.”

Beacon Academy is proud to continue supporting the vital work of Charlie’s Promise, and we are pleased to confirm that the charity will be receiving a donation from the funds raised during this year’s sponsored walk. This reflects our community’s shared commitment to promoting safety, responsibility and positive choices for young people.
