GCSE Exam Results

Key Stage 4 Examination Results 2017

Beacon Academy students excel in new, tougher GCSEs despite pass rates dipping nationally.

This year’s GCSEs, just like A Levels, have gone through significant reforms, meaning that:

More challenging GCSE examinations have been introduced in English and Mathematics. The grading for these two subjects has changed, moving from an A star- G scale to a 9- 1 scale, with 9 being the very highest. Grade 4 is considered a Standard Pass (the old C grade) and grade 5 a Strong Pass. Following on from last week’s exceptional, best ever A Level results, we are delighted and immensely proud to announce that we have replicated those outstanding outcomes with our strongest set of GCSE results.

Our phenomenal students have a great deal to be proud of and have much to celebrate. Over 77% of our students have achieved five or more GCSEs including English and Maths at grades 9-4 (the new standard pass – the old A star- C grade and above). Over 60% have achieved five or more GCSEs including English and Maths at grades 9-5 (a strong pass – the new measure).

We are also delighted to report a record number of our students achieving the very top grades. More than a quarter of our students have achieved five or more A star- A grades and nearly half of our students have achieved five or more A*- B grades.

We have also had some truly exceptional subject performances once again this year. In Mathematics, a third of the whole year group achieved the very top grades of 9-7 (the old A star-A). 85% achieved grades 9-4 (the old grades A star- C and above) and 67% achieved grades 9-5.

In English, a quarter of the whole year group achieved the very top grades of 9-7 (the old A star-A). 82% achieved grades 9-4 (the old A star-C and above) and 70% achieved grades 9-5.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics all achieved over 95% A star-C grades. Physical Education and Performing Arts (Drama) achieved 93% and 92% respectively. Modern Foreign Languages achieved 89% A star - C for French and 84% A star - C for German. Photography achieved 80% A star- C, Art and Design achieved 78% A star - C and Dance 75% A*- C.

It is always difficult to single out individual students, especially in such a truly exceptional year, however we would like to congratulate our highest performing students this year (number of A star- A grades):

Headteacher, Anna Robinson has said, ‘I am absolutely delighted and immensely proud of our inspirational students once again. It has been an incredible journey for them all and these results are a real testament to their dedication and hard work. There has been a colossal team effort from the staff and students alongside infinite support from their parents/carers throughout the academic year to ensure that all of our Year 11’s have had the best possible opportunities, putting them in a prime position to achieve the very best outcomes for their futures.

These exceptional results - which will be widely celebrated - are a complete reflection of everyone’s utter determination and belief in one another, combined with our unrelenting ambition, resilience and desire to succeed and achieve excellence in all we do at Beacon Academy.’
