Beacon Curling Team
The Beacon Curling team was founded in October 2013 when eight ambitious, brave, and excited students signed up to learn about a new winter Olympic sport. Since then, the club has grown from strength to strength each year, with the maximum forty-four students now representing the school as part of the Beacon Curling team.
The students dedicate three hours each week to their training, and are improving each time they take to the ice. The Beacon Curling League sees each of our eleven teams play against each other in a round-robin format, with the top three teams winning trophies at the end of the season. The students also have further opportunities outside of the school programme, as many play regularly in the South of England Curling Club leagues against adult opposition. In the Kent & Sussex Bonspiel in November 2018, teams representing Beacon placed 5th, 7th, 8th, and 11th out 12 in a tough competition.
Furthermore, many of our students are now representing England at an international level.
Year 13 student Sydney Boyd recently played for England at the 2018 World Mixed Curling Championships in Kelowna BC, Canada. This was not a junior competition, but for the best adult Mixed Curling teams in the world! At 16, Sydney was the youngest competitor to take part and made all of us at Beacon very proud.
In December 2019, Sydney will once again skip (captain) the England Junior Women’s team at the World Junior Curling Championships in Finland. Playing in her team will be fellow current Year 13 student, Anna Howey and current Year 12 student, Annabelle Martin. Beacon Curling alumni Joe Sugden, Felix Price, and Archer Woods retain their status as the English Junior Men’s team.
Following the Year 7 Curling Taster Day in April 2019, we are delighted to have a fantastic crop of ambitious curlers who in 2019-2020 will join the Beacon Curling team and take their first steps towards becoming the curling superstars of the future!
