Beacon Curling Team
The Beacon Curling team was founded in October 2013 when 8 ambitious, brave, and excited students signed up to learn about a new winter Olympic sport.
At the end of their first season, two teams entered the English Schools Curling Championships. The Blue team finished 2nd (Orlagh Hensey, Nic Tappenden, Felix Price, Olivia Millar) and the Red team finished 4th (Joe Sugden, Gaby Smith, Archer Woods, Holly Austen). This was an outstanding achievement, especially since the Red team beat the eventual winners Walthamstow Hall in our first ever competitive game!
For their efforts, we were rewarded with the Novice Trophy for best new curling school in the country.
Since then, the club has grown tremendously, with 15 students now representing the school in local competitions and the national English Schools Curling Championships in March each year.
The students dedicate 3 hours each week to their training, and are improving each time they take to the ice. The students also have further opportunities beyond representing their school, with 4 of them already taking part in the Kent & Sussex Junior Curling Club.
No doubt, if they keep up this dedication, some of our youngsters will be able to represent England at international competitions in no time!
