Sixth Form

Preparation for life in the 21st Century

Our Sixth Form continues to go from strength to strength with consistently outstanding A Level results. Our specialist staff provide exceptional tuition at the highest level, supported by specialist advice and guidance. Our students thrive academically, benefitting from a highly personalised and independent approach to learning that prepares them for the best universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, or high quality training and employment.

Careers advice and guidance are effective because this support is independently delivered one-to-one and forms part of students’ study programmes. Students are given high levels of support in deciding on their next steps, including with personal statements for higher education places.” Ofsted

Embarking on your life as a Sixth Form student at Beacon brings a wealth of opportunities and exciting new challenges, whether this is as an existing Beacon student or a student from another establishment. We offer a broad curriculum, in both traditional or vocational A/BTEC level courses. In addition to this, you also are given the opportunity to retake your Maths and English GCSEs alongside these courses should you need to.

Outstanding results

For a third year running, we are celebrating another extremely successful year at Beacon Academy with our best ever results with almost a third (31%) of our students achieving A’s and A*.

Our vocational results are also excellent with our average grade being a Distinction. Our latest Ofsted inspection in 2017 confirmed that we “offer excellent opportunities for students while also achieving excellent results.”

Our results for our year 13 students have been consistently improving over the last few years and we project that they will continue to do so, despite there being very little change in the national A level results.

Life in the Sixth Form

Students are encouraged to develop their intellectual, social and emotional independence in a purposeful and ambitious setting. In addition to their studies, there is a focus on students contribution to the wider life of our school through a variety of programmes.

Beacon Sixth Form benefits from a dedicated site, with experienced and committed staff, specialist facilities and excellent ICT facilities. While we aim for you to reach your highest academic potential and aspirations, we also offer students a variety of enrichments opportunities throughout their time in the Sixth Form. This includes a traditional weekly afternoon session for you to take part in a wide range of opportunities from sporting activities to organising your own club/society and an annual trip to Gambia that many of our students take part in and benefit enormously from as a learning experience, enhancing their practical, organisational and decision-making skills. It is our aim that all Sixth Form students participate fully in Sixth Form life, to make it a vibrant and an exciting place. Last but not least we want you to enjoy yourself!

The high expectations set at the lower school, continue into our Sixth Form and students are expected to work hard, and demonstrate commitment, resilience and determination to support their success. You will work in partnership with staff to ensure that you are reaching your targets; with your peers in sharing your experiences; and with the wider community in supporting others. Staff will also work in collaboration with your parents to ensure you achieve the very best outcomes.

Students really enjoy their studies and appreciate the more adult environment of the sixth-form study centre. Students feel safe and well looked after and conduct themselves maturely.” Ofsted
