At the Academy’s first whole school event of the year, Beacon Academy students and staff came together to collectively complete a challenging 10km sponsored walk around Crowborough on Friday 28 September, pledging a record-breaking £22,000 in sponsorship to support the school and charities nominated by the students of the Academy Council.
Reflecting the Beacon Academy motto to inspire, believe, achieve and succeed, all students from Years 7 – 13 and all staff take part in this annual flagship event, walking or running the 10km route and supporting at marshal points.
Organised by the Academy’s excellent PE Department, this exciting event demonstrates the great value Beacon places on the benefit of being active, and the positive impact it can make to the lives of young people. The event was also registered as part of the #BeActive campaign to promote sport and physical activity, launched to celebrate the European Week of Sport, 23 – 30 September.
Last year, students pledged an amazing £18,000, and voted to donate a proportion of funds raised to Clued-Up.Info, a local charity offering mental health counselling sessions to students, and Snow Camp, a UK-registered charity using a unique combination of snow sports, life skills sessions, qualifications and work experience to support inner-city young people. A donation was also made to the Sixth Form Gambia campaign, in support of our Sixth Formers’ annual trip to distribute aid to communities in the West African country. This year, half of all funds raised by our Sixth Form students will go towards the Gambia fund.
In addition to supporting the school’s nominated charities, this year’s Sponsored Walk supports the campaign to replace the Academy’s AstroTurf surface, a facility used daily by the whole school community, plus the students of Grove Park School, local primary schools and external community sports clubs.
As a reward for obtaining sponsorship, students have the opportunity to win prizes. For every £25 raised, students will be entered into a prize draw to win one of six FitBit watches available to each year group from Years 7 – 11, and one for Years 12 and 13. Additionally, for every £50 raised, students will receive an entry into a second prize draw to win an Apple watch.
At the end of the walk, all students were rewarded with a special lunch free of charge, kindly provided by Chartwells, the Academy’s catering company.
Students have pledged an incredible £22,000, an amount that will have an enormous impact on the education and enrichment of every student at Beacon Academy.
Donations may now be returned, preferably via ParentPay or in a labelled and sealed envelope to Reception. We would like to thank all students, parents and carers and extended families and friends for their fantastic support.
