A team of nine Beacon Academy students and members of the Science Department were invited to visit the Mid Sussex District Council Chambers in Haywards Heath to attend the launch of the Mid Sussex STEM Challenge this week.
Beacon Academy joins just five other schools from across the county taking part in this inter-school competition. This year’s challenge requires the students to work as a team to design and build a drone for commercial use, which must fulfil the parameters set out by the challenge organisers on the day of the launch. They must also form a business where each student has a role to play and demonstrate their project management skills.
Their work will be assessed on 22 March, when the team will present their business plan and demonstrate the capabilities of their drone to a panel of judges in a “Dragon’s Den” scenario.
The launch ceremony was held at Haywards Heath on Thursday 20 September, and was attended by the High Sheriff of West Sussex.
