The Beacon Academy community is looking forward to celebrating the beginning of the academic year with our annual whole school Sponsored Walk on Friday 28 September.
All students from Years 7 - 13 and all staff will take part in this inspirational flagship event, walking the 10km route around Crowborough and towards Rotherfield to raise funds for our school and charities nominated by the students of the Academy Council.
Last year, students pledged an amazing £18,000, and voted to donate a proportion of funds raised to Clued-Up.Info, a local charity offering mental health counselling sessions to students, and Snow Camp, a UK-registered charity using a unique combination of snow sports, life skills sessions, qualifications and work experience to support inner-city young people. A donation was also made to the Sixth Form Gambia campaign, in support of our Sixth Formers’ annual trip to distribute aid to communities in the West African country. This year, half of all funds raised by our Sixth Form students will go towards the Gambia fund.
As well as supporting our nominated charities, this year’s Sponsored Walk will support the campaign to replace the Academy’s AstroTurf surface, a facility used daily by the whole school community, plus the students of Grove Park School, local primary schools and external community sports clubs.
This exciting challenge reflects the Beacon Academy core values, and our commitment to inspire and believe in one another to achieve our ambitions and succeed in life. It also reflects the great value we place on the benefit of PE and school sport, and the positive impact it can make to the lives of young people. The Beacon Academy Sponsored Walk is also registered as part of the #BeActive campaign to promote sport and physical activity, launched to celebrate the European Week of Sport, 23 – 30 September.
As a reward for obtaining sponsorship, students will have the opportunity to win prizes. For every £25 raised, students will be entered into a prize draw to win one of six FitBit watches available to each year group from Years 7 – 11, and one for Years 12 and 13. Additionally, for every £50 raised, students will receive an entry into a second prize draw to win an Apple watch.
At the end of the walk, all students will be provided with a lunch voucher from our school catering company, Chartwells, who are kindly providing a special lunch, free of charge.
Students are reminded to please return their completed and signed consent and sponsorship form to their tutors on Friday 21 September.
We are extremely grateful for your support for this very important fundraising event for our school and your children, which we hope will be the most successful Sponsored Walk to date.
