On behalf of all students, staff and trustees at Beacon Academy, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Waitrose Crowborough and everyone that so generously supported our school with the Waitrose Community Matters scheme.
By placing green tokens in the box located in store during the month of August, shoppers were able to help us to raise more than £400 to put towards our campaign to replace the Academy’s AstroTurf surface, a facility used daily by the whole school community, plus the students of Grove Park School, local primary schools and external community sports clubs.
Beacon Academy places great value on the benefit of PE and school sport, and the positive impact it can make to the lives of young people. Staying active can help students to be healthy and happy, boost confidence, and encourage them to develop a love of sports, and equipping them with the confidence, resilience and core life skills such as leadership and teamwork needed to help them progress to further education and employment.
Thanks to the great care taken to maintain and repair it to extend its life, the current AstroTurf is in surprisingly good condition despite its age – it is eighteen years old! Three years beyond its fifteen-year life span. However, the surface is now starting to show signs of wear, especially at the points of heaviest usage. The pile is wearing down and small tears are starting to appear. A like-for-like replacement will cost £128,640. Crowborough Hockey Club have pledged to make a very generous contribution towards the replacement of the AstroTurf surface, and the school has made an additional application for funding from The Hockey Foundation.
