Members of Beacon Academy’s Diversity Club were honoured and excited to welcome high profile transgender couple Hannah Winterbourne and Jake Graf to the school last week.
Diversity Club is open to all staff and students and meets during lunch time once a week. The club began three years ago, and in 2016 received the prestigious Speaker’s School Council Award by the Speaker of the House of Commons. Captain Hannah Winterbourne, the highest-ranking trans officer in the British Army, and trans actor and film maker, Jake Graf had been invited to speak to the group by Teacher of English at Beacon Academy, Miss Richardson and kindly visited the school on Friday 13 July.
The session began with a brief introduction to Diversity Club and the work they do to celebrate diversity and promote a better understanding of different cultures both inside and outside of school by founding member and teacher Miss Mortlock. This was followed by an informal Q&A session with Hannah and Jake, who spoke of their experiences and communicated a positive and uplifting message to all present.
Capt. Hannah Winterbourne and Jake Graf are patrons of the award-winning charity, Mermaids, supporting children and young people up to 20 years old who are transgender and/or gender diverse, and their families, and professionals involved in their care.
